Farrier Joe Kriz wipes the sweat from his face while taking a break from shoeing horses at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury on a late summer day in 2001. Kriz learned the skill from his father, a sixth-generation farrier, at the age of 8. In his mid-80s, Kriz was still shoeing three or four horses several times a week. Kriz passed away at age 93 in 2010.
