  • Kelly Langford, of Hartford, and Rob Dio, of Boston, students at the School of the Hartford Ballet, perform a piece called 'Tiger Rag'  in the Morgan Great Hall at the Wadsworth Atheneum during an event called Family Saturday. The event included activities throughout the  Atheneum, Bushnell Park and other downtown locations and was sponsored by the Greater Hartford Arts Council.

  • Jack Hacker fits a replacement pane in one of the multi-paned windows in the sanctuary of the Center Congregational Church in Manchester.  Hacker and a co-worker were replacing 28 cracked panes after painting the windows and trim. The church celebrated its centennial  in 2004.

  • Galvin Stuart, 3, leafs through a children's book while his mom, Jill Stuart, browses the shelves at the Acton Public Library in Old Saybook. They had already visited the children's department so Galvin was just waiting for his mom to finish. Moments later she found a book about Charles M. Schultz on all the Peanuts characters which kept Galvin occupied for a while.  "It's too cold to play outside today, so we thought it was a good day for the library," Stuart explained.

  • Clyde Burkhardt, of Madison, rows with his yellow lab Mr. Porter as copilot, off the Madison coastline on a bright summer morning. Burkhardt takes Mr. Porter rowing in his 18-foot shell a couple of times a week as he has since getting him as a puppy five years ago.  Mr. Porter loves the ride, according to Burkhardt. When he puts the boat in the water "he jumps right in," Burkhardt said.

  • Dancers Heather Lombardo, Samantha Silvers and Jill Vasbinder perform a piece called "When the Fat Lady Sings", a collage of quirky vignettes to classic opera favorites, during dress rehearsal of Full Force Dance Theatre's New Beginnings performance at Millard Auditorium at the University of Hartford.  Full Force will premier this piece along with other works by Artistic Director Katie Stevinson-Nollet.

  • Ray Couture, 17, of Glastonbury, hoists a lath of broadleaf tobacco being handed up from a truck for drying in the rafters of a barn at Riverview Farm in South Glastonbury.  Couture works for his grandfather, who owns the farm, each summer for the three-week harvest.

  • Dressed in togas, Rocky Hill High School students Mark Zebrowski and Luke Devine  battle Stratford High School in a tug-of war contest at the 34th annual Connecticut State Latin Day at the Holiday Hill resort in Prospect. Latin students from fifty-two middle and high schools across Connecticut competed in academic and athletic contests throughout the day. Rocky Hill won this heat of the tug-of-war.  This year's theme was "non semper ea sunt quae videntur" which translates as "things aren't always what they seem."

  • Debbie Fisher trims the hair on the fetlock of Pat, one of the late Charles Wimler's Belgian draft horses in the barn on the historic Wimler farm on the Guilford/Durham line in 2005.  Pat and partner Mike were the last team of draft horses owned by Wimler.  He sold his other teams after he stopped offering hay and sleigh rides several years ago when insurance costs got too high. Fisher feeds and exercises Pat and Mike and keeps them looking good in their retirement.

  • John Deniz Mitchell, 5 months, delights in his first ride on a carousel with his dad, Denis Mitchell, on the opening day of the season of the Bushnell Park Carousel. The carousel is one of less than 200 antique carousels left in the country and dates back to 1914.

  • Gabrielle Collins, as the Sugar Plum Fairy, is  lifted by Andrew Matte, as the Prince, during a dress rehearsal for the Hartt School Community Division's "The Nutcracker" at Millard Auditorium in West Hartford in 2013.  Collins, now a professional dancer, first performed in "The Nutcracker" as a mouse when she was a child, and has always dreamed of dancing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

  • Guests at An Evening in White hold sparklers aloft as a full moon rises over a vacant lot on Main Street in Durham in September 2014. About 280 people attended the flash mob-style event held as a fundraiser for the United Churches of Durham and the local food panty.  Guests were instructed to arrive dressed all in white with their dinner, drinks, dinnerware, candles, centerpieces and drinks in tow.  The organizers provided the tables, chairs and linens and the location was kept secret until a few hours before the start of the event.

  • Sr. Mary Apollonia lines up pans of babka dough in preparation for baking in the kitchen of the Felician Sisters Our Lady of the Angels Convent in Enfield. These are among  the last of 2,000 babki that Sr. Apollonia has been busy baking to sell at the Felician Sisters annual Lawn  Festival. Polish food is a big attraction at the event, but the babka, a Polish sweet bread, is the most popular. 'If you don't get there  by 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. the bread will be gone,' Sr. Apollonia said.

Kurnat, who lives across the street from the river, heads out most days, weather permitting, with Scout, an 8-year-old Australian shepherd, as navigator. "He's like a minor celebrity around here," said Kurnat. "Everybody knows him!"

The Darnells, both Egyptologists, are vintage fashion aficionados and are frequently seen walking through town dressed in clothing from the 20s and 30s. "People drive by and take pictures out the car window all the time," Colleen Darnell said.
