  • Ashley Colon, 13, (center) and Andrea Gombosh, 14, (right) comfort Janee Pettigrew, 11, (left) as they visit the site of an early-morning fire that killed Janee's cousin, Christopher Bailey, 15, in his home in West Hartford. They were among several friends and relatives that gathered near the house after school to try and make some sense of the tragedy and offer each other comfort.  Bailey's body was found in an upstairs bedroom.  His grandfather escaped the blaze by jumping out a second floor window.  The fire is under investigation.

Matthew Arace who died in a car accident while off duty, after the burial service at Cedar Hill Cemetery.  Linde and Arace were close friends and one-time roommates.  "He was a good person - not just a good cop.  He was a really good person," Linde said, remembering his friend.

  • Investigators shine a flashlight into the back of a house on Charter Oak Avenue in East Haven after a plane crashed into it Friday morning. Four people died when the plan suddenly lost altitude and crashed into two houses near Tweed New Haven airport.

  • Sarah Mancini, of Kingstown, RI, weeps in front of a memorial to her son, Keith Mancini, who died in the Station night club fire on February 20, 2003.  The memorial is one of 100 tributes to the victims of the tragic blaze that encircle the site.  Keith Mancini, who was 34 at the time of his death, was playing in the band that opened for the headliner, Great White, whose pyrotechnics started the fire.  She visited the site after the Derderian brothers, the club's owners, were sentenced in court.  "Was justice done?  I don't know, I don't know..." she said.  "I just feel very empty right now."

That tragic morning, a man entered the school and shot 20 first-graders and six educators before turning the gun on himself in one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.

  • Old Saybrook firefighters hose down hot spots in the smoldering ruins of a cottage that burned down during Hurricane Sandy which barreled into southern New England on October 29, 2012.  Firefighters were unable to reach the blaze due to serious flooding.  The fire spread to the neighboring cottage, destroying it as well.

The crash of the small plane, which was attempting a landing in rainy weather at nearby Tweed New Haven Airport, set the two houses ablaze. A small makeshift memorial is seen in the lower left.

  • Shayna Weinstein, left, gets a hug from her dad, Andy Weinstein, as they prepare to leave what's left of their summer cottage (at left) on Cosey Beach in East Haven, the day after it was destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011.  The storm, which completely flattened the house and several others on Cosey Beach, struck on Shayna's 16th birthday. "It's the worst birthday I've ever had," she said.

  • Robert Montano watches a fire destroy 18-20 Raymond Road in West Hartford from a business across the street.  Montano owns the neighboring building, 10-14 Raymond Road.  Firefighters had to let the 7:00 a.m. blaze burn through the roof and gut the building before extinguishing it.

  • Jose Vasquez, 19, watches as a friend lights candles with a lighter designed to look like a handgun at a memorial for their slain friend, Geronimo "Colorao" Urbaez, on Affleck Street after attending his wake.  Urbaez was gunned down Monday morning in downtown Hartford.  This is the fourth makeshift memorial the mourners had erected after police made them dismantle the first three, two on Park Street and here on Affleck Street where Urbaez hung out.  The mourners vowed to stay put this time, asserting their right to honor their friend, since his body is being sent to the Dominican Republic for burial. They feel they need a place to pay their respects.

  • Connecticut State Trooper Kevin Rodino points to a spot he wants his K-9 to search for victims in the rubble of L'Ambiance Plaza, a 16-story apartment building that collapsed during construction on April 23, 1987 in Bridgeport. Although a few survivors were pulled to safety in the days following the collapse, 28 construction workers were killed, one of the worst disasters in modern Connecticut history.

Cornell Lewis, an activist, faces a group of Hartford police officers while blocking the road behind the Old State House with other protesters during rush hour on June 8, 2015, in an event organized by Moral Monday Connecticut, whose mission is to conduct demonstrations to promote a conversation about reforming the criminal justice system.  Seventeen people, including Lewis, were arrested in the peaceful protest.

  • Anabel Pagan, Gabrielle Fasolino, Lissie Ramos, and Marisol Bonet (l-r) pray at the bedside of Anabel's eldest daughter, Sofi.  Sofi and her younger brother Daniel suffer from Batten disease, a rare, fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system also known as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses, that slowly stips victims of their motor skills. Anabel and Felix believe that Sofi and Daniel are angels sent to them to bring people closer to God.  When people meet the Pagans or hear their story they are often moved to prayer - prayers of healing and prayers to sustain the family through their grief.  Marisol is a charismatic healer who had not seen the family in two years, but stopped by to pray for Sofi.
