  • Ajou Deng, 6'11", was a center for UConn from 1999 to 2001. With a 7-foot-4 wingspan, he was touted as potentially a great player but never reached his potential. He transferred to Fairfield to finish out his college career before playing professionally in Great Britain. Deng posed for a portrait for a profile that ran in Northeast Magazine.

  • Farrier Joe Kriz wipes the sweat from his face while taking a break from shoeing horses at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury on a late summer day in 2001. Kriz learned the skill from his father, a sixth-generation farrier, at the age of 8. In his mid-80s, Kriz was still shoeing three or four horses several times a week. Kriz passed away at age 93 in 2010.

  • Pulitzer prize-winning playwright August Wilson was photographed in March, 2005, before presenting his new play, "Radio Golf" at the Yale Rep in New Haven. Wilson passed away later that year.

  • Willard Holmes and Coleman Casey are pictured in front of the former Hartford Times building in 2006 when they were spear-heading an expansion of the Wadsworth Atheneum into the landmark building. The expansion effort failed and the University of Connecticut moved their West Hartford campus into the site in 2017.

  • Matt Klucha holds his hand-crafted MPKlucha sportif frameset his garage that serves as his home bicycle business, MSH1 Bicycle Works (Matt's Superb Handbuilts.)  He left his job as a mechanical engineer at Pratt & Whitney to build custom bikes.  His MSH1 race frameset is in the stand in front of Klucha.

  • Thurston Couser at 100.  Couser was a subject in a series called Spirit of a Century that profiled Connecticut residents who reached the century mark. A retired quality control inspector at Pratt & Whitney for 48 years, Couser passed away in 2014 at 102.

  • Ida Sanderson clips on a pair of earrings in the bedroom of her cozy Cape in Hamden where at 100, she still lived independently in 2012.  Sanderson was part of a series titled Spirit of a Century which profiled centenarians across Connecticut. A Chippendales calendar hangs on the wall.  Sanderson was getting ready to go play Wii bowling with a group of friends as she did every Monday.  "Never worry about getting older," she said.  "Each phase of your life has a special moment." Sanderson passed away in 2016 at age 105.

  • Rev. Bruce M. Shipman, former chaplain of the Episcopal Church at Yale, was forced out after a letter he wrote to the New York Times regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict caused an uproar.  He is pictured in his Groton home.

  • Dani Arranka, a Hartford trans woman who is an actress and singer, stars in one of the short films showing in this year's Connecticut LGBT Film Festival. Arranka is pictured at Cine Studio at Trinity College, one of the venues for the festival.

  • Al Dornan walks along Goff Street in Wethersfield carrying a sign in support of immigrants. Frustrated with Congress's lack of action on immigration reform, Dornan heard a voice in his head urging him to take action. He decided to start walking through his neighborhood and has walked 2 1/2 miles for 395 consecutive days holding his sign. "I won't stop until I'm physically unable to walk," he said.

  • Renowned children's book author Maurice Sendak poses for a portrait in his studio in Ridgefield, Connecticut, in 2006. The studio was decorated with memorabilia depicting characters from his many books, including "Where the Wild Things Are." Sendak passed away in 2012 at age 83.

  • Peter Yarrow, of the classic folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, visited Farmington in 2002 to speak to a teachers association about bullying.  In 2000, Yarrow founded Operation Respect, an educational organization dedicated to prevent bullying among children.  He travels around the country giving musical presentations and sharing his song, "Don't Laugh at Me."
